Dungeons of Doom is a fun, fast-paced iOS platformer for players of all ages – from kids discovering the genre to grown-ups nostalgic for the classics. I was brought on to refresh the game’s visual identity: designing the UI for menu screens, updating the logo, and creating eye-catching App Store artwork.
The game takes place deep inside a castle, packed with stone walls, wooden beams, and heavy ironwork. The cool, moody blue palette makes the brightly coloured heroes, monsters, and traps pop off the screen. I carried that aesthetic into the UI with bold, chiseled edges, blue tones, and bright highlight colours. After testing a range of fonts, I chose Aldo the Apache – perfect for the sculpted stone look we wanted.
One of my favourite parts was designing the collectible hero cards. Each hero is a cartoon character with a big head, expressive eyes, and a vibrant outfit. To make them stand out, I used a simple parchment background and added small icon ribbons to show how they’re unlocked – either with coins or via in-app purchase. Collected heroes get a coloured border, so players can instantly see who they’ve unlocked.
I also designed level select screens (18 levels in total), and icon sets for the Donate and Settings screens.
Plus I polished up the game’s logo, improving spacing, proportions, outlines, and adding highlights for a more professional, “carved stone” feel.
Finally, I helped boost the App Store conversion rate by 18% by redesigning the screenshots. Instead of plain gameplay shots, I added custom frames and short text callouts to highlight the game’s best features. These were adapted for iPhone 5, 6, X, and iPad.
